The common blame by most of the coaches during the last season was “we've got poor foreign players” and some of the leading clubs such as Victory and New Radiant suffered heavily. New Radiant ended their AFC Cup campaign without a single point in their hand meanwhile, Victory had a disappointing start. They even rested their foreign players and played just with their local players. Reason: poor scouting

Maldivian football clubs are not managed with good club boards even though they exist. Financially they lack any well established structure. The main finance is by the government, sales of tickets and well-wishers. Nothing more nothing less. This has lead to a hit on the head of the nail of Maldivian football and has suffered huge setbacks. Lacks of financial resources even if there exist just believes in a friendly agent who pops out a player which can bring success to the club.

So what should be done?

Maldivian football clubs needs to hire agents and an established person in the club to look for young talented players. The person would look out for good players whom they could see not in their dreams but through videos and even on sight. The adoptability in ASEAN and South Asian region is also another factor.

Maldivian soccer lacks this maturity. Players are just hired for the trust in the words of the agents or the well-wishers. There are number of mails hitting maldivesoccer.com mail inbox from player agents from Europe, South America and even Africa. They just sent emails with prospect players with best possible profiles and at the last minute the whole thing goes in to a saga. The name would sound big, but in reality they are worse than the local players. This happened to Valencia a couple of seasons back. Maldivesoccer.com has even helped some of the leading clubs to verify the CVs through the Football Organisations in the respective countries and various journalists.

The competitive ASEAN clubs hire the best prospect players making their squad strong. The comments made by Gerd and Mauroof (Maattey) last season say it all. “Their foreign players just showed the difference.”

Yes. The clubs in the ASEAN region are not much different to us. It's only the foreign player which makes the difference. The only way to match them is by better scouting methods for players.
